Our Planet (she is achangin’)

Our planet she is a-changin’,
her climate rearrangin’.
Potential problems are many,
perhaps as many as twenty.

Our human activity is the culprit,
giving us all cause to dispirit.
Greenhouse gases in our air increasin’,
of  the “greenhouse effect” I’m speakin’.

Commonly known as global warmin’,
a true danger to earth is a-formin’.
The frequency of storms is a-risin’,
more violent hurricanes up-sizin’.

Some areas experiencing droughts,
others having flooding bouts.
Our planet’s weather, at greater extremes,
is wrecking havoc over it’s many regimes.

An increase of volcanos blowing their tops,
tornados destroying newly found stops.
The permafrost soil at both of earth’s poles,
is a-meltin’ away under no one’s controls.

Our planet’s temperature consistently a-risin’,
along with it’s seas, not really surprisin’.
Low-lying coasts, beaches around the globe,
could disappear under a high ocean’s probe.

Marine life of today is under dire threat,
ocean circulation patterns have become upset,
causing plankton, base of the aquatic food chain,
to reduce productivity so millions fewer remain.

Forty percent of land species are now endangered,
an undeniable reason an environment altered.
Our planet’s summers are now hotter than ever,
snowfall in spring is yet another endeavor.

She has other problems not related to warmin’,
checking population growth she’s not conformin’.
Acid rain from human emissions continues to fall,
as if global warming wasn’t enough for our call.

But answer the call we can and answer it we must,
there are things we can do, actions we can trust.
Lets start “living green”, you can learn how online,
as citizens of earth we can’t afford to decline.

Our planet has nurtured us since we were born,
now it’s our turn to help her, not leave her forlorn.
The full consequences of global warmin’
will take a very long time a-formin’,

it’s likely we won’t see the worst in our day.
But think of our children, and let’s not delay
to try to leave them a world that’ll never succumb,
replete with it’s wonders and all it can become.

POET’S NOTE: This poem is written rather whimsically
in spots as evidenced by my substitution of apostrophes
for the letter “g” and the use of non-words such as
“a-changin’”. However, it’s only a poem, whereby global
warming and its potentially devastating impact on our
planet Earth is for real and a threat to be taken seriously.
Please do what you can, as will I, to help restore our
planet’s health. You might consider writing to the
appropriate government agency in your country to request
the agency take action in an effort to halt, or at least slow,
global warming. The time for action is now. Wherever you
may live, this is one we’re truly all in together. Your
comments are always more than welcome, and I thank
you for visiting poetrymine.com.
