Ambling as slowly as I could through
the Muse’e Rodin, I soon stood face
to face with the original “Thinker”,
still sitting on his rock, fist pressed
to his teeth, dreaming, creating, and
yes, thinking, after all these years,
and after all these years still an
inspiration to poets worldwide.
I studied him in awe, stared into his eyes
wondering if now he somehow was studying
me. I wanted to engage in conversation,
perhaps debate fine art, yet I was glad he
was only sculpture, knowing full well I
would play the fool to one who has sustained
fertile, non-stop creative thought for ages.
Though exhilarated to be in the presence of
this bronze poetic hero, I decided not to take
the chance, moving on to a lesser known Rodin
work, conceding any possible debate with The
Thinker without a word spoken between us.

Two trees in a park,
One lush and green.
A few feet away,
One weak and lean.
They share the same soil,
Same weather as well.
One had grown strong,
One a mere shell.
I sat on a bench
To ponder the question,
Of how they mirrored
The human condition.
Why do two persons
With equal chance,
One find success
One miss life’s dance?
We can learn a lesson
From the lush green tree.
It’s not what you have,
It’s what you can be.

In a world filled with struggle and strife,
take time for the simple pleasures in life.
Watch the sun set in the western sky,
savor the aroma of a freshly baked pie.
When a robin sings it’s cheery song,
listen up quickly before it’s gone.
Overlook your children laugh and play,
it’s guaranteed to make your day.
Gaze at bright stars on a clear still night,
meditate on a butterfly’s erratic flight.
Read a good book while soaking in a bath,
amble through the forest on a dusty path.
Listen to serious music, say Mozart or Bach,
sleep in on a weekend, don’t set the clock.
Inhale the flowers scent as it floats in air,
stroll the beach barefoot, wind in your hair.
Sip an icy drink on a sizzling hot day,
relish a seagull’s dive as it fishes the bay.
These things are certain to bring your life glee,
and all without going on a spending spree.

Sitting dead still in the rush hour jam
yet again, almost ten minutes since
moving an inch, late for work, low on
gas, his ears perked straight up when
the voice on the radio – no, it couldn’t
be God could it? – announced a miracle.
At first the voice had spewed out what
he was experiencing at the moment.
“The world’s population topped six and
a half billion in 2006″ it boomed, but
followed by words that, unable to hug
his radio, prompted a few healthy pats.
“Kind of makes you want to move to
Pitcairn Island in the south Pacific.
Forty-five happy souls, the planet’s
least populated jurisdiction.”
Bingo! With his wife and two kids,
the planet’s least populated jurisdiction
soon increased almost 10 percent.
The census won’t count the dog.

When dawn’s first light breaks o’er the hill
When morning dew glistens the daffodil
When birds chirp softly their early shrill
When forest animals stir from sleepy still
I lean out my window, breathe the crisp air
Savor the beauty, breeze blowing my hair
When out the door on my sunrise stroll
When natures wonders before me unfold
When I spot a rabbit climb from its hole
When I see a wild horse tending its foal
A commune with nature is what I love best
Mind, body, and soul, all fill with zest.
When a flock of birds take sudden flight
When the brook bubbles music to my delight
When a frog hops to it with legs of might
When ducks swim by in the misty light
I always thank God I live so near
Before turning for home till tomorrow is here.
